Pupil Premium

Who is eligible for the Pupil Premium?

Pupils are eligible for the Pupil Premium if certain criteria are met. These are:

  • Ever 6 Free School Meals Children- children who have been eligible for free school meals in of any the last six years
  • Looked after Children in the care of the local authority
  • Children who are no longer looked after by the local authority due to adoption, guardianship or residence order
  • Children of families where one or more parents is, or has been, in the Armed Forces.

Why has it been introduced?

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) and their wealthier peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most. Whilst schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit, we are required to publish online information about how we have used the Premium.

Pupil Premium for Early Years children will be allocated in the same way as Pupil Premium but at a reduced amount per child, until the term after the child turns 5, when the the funding increases to the full amount of £1480.

In June 2019 The EEF Guide to the Pupil Premium was published. It aims to support schools in spending their Pupil Premium to maximise the benefit for their students. The report recommends school take a tiered approach to Pupil Premium spending. Teaching should be the top priority, including professional development, training and support for early career teachers and recruitment and retention.
Targeted support for struggling pupils should also be a key component of an effective Pupil Premium strategy; as well as strategies that relate to non-academic factors, including improving attendance, behaviour and social and emotional support.

At Our Lady's this includes:

  • Additional support in making academic progress- staffing, booster classes, interventions, equipment.
  • Assistance with uniform and stationery, where required.
  • Provision of dedicated academic and pastoral staff to promote the academic progress of disadvantaged students.
  • Assistance with the finance for educational visits.
  • Provision of bespoke enrichment opportunities for disadvantaged students.

Service Pupil Premium children will be looked at on an individual basis after consultation with parents about needs.
